IT cannot create a sustainable competitive advantage through business process. A sustainable competitive advantage is only created through the mastery of a company’s data.
In today’s world, it is heresy to customize a packaged application. The vendor invested years to build the industry “footprint” into the application. Customers of these companies buy the software to leverage the best practices.
If this is the case, can business process provide a sustainable competitive advantage? The short answer is NO. In today’s world, people purchase packaged applications and follow the golden IT rule -- customize as little as possible, i.e. go vanilla. In essence, business process has become business parity.
If companies follow the same process, why are some more efficient than others. It has nothing to do with the process, but the data that runs through the process. The mastery of data has provided a sustainable competitive advantage.
